Biography

Prof. Mohammad Gulrez is a Senior Professor of Political Science in the Department of West Asian & North African Studies at Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), one of India's most historic institutions of higher learning. Over a career spanning nearly forty years, he rose from Lecturer (1987) to Reader, Professor and, since 2019, Senior Professor, while shaping the university's academic direction through a succession of senior administrative roles.

He served as the officiating Vice-Chancellor of AMU (April 2023–April 2024) and earlier as Pro-Vice-Chancellor (2022–2023), Dean of the Faculty of International Studies, and Dean of Students' Welfare. His scholarship centres on West Asian and North African affairs, Arab nationalism, conflict resolution, peace-building and the comparative politics of emerging democracies.

Prof. Gulrez has taught and researched internationally — as an ICCR Visiting Chair Professor at the University of Colombo, Sri Lanka, and as Visiting Faculty in Political Science at the National University of Rwanda — and has engaged with governments, universities and international forums across more than twenty countries.
